Thousands of feet below the surface world, the city of Solypse churns trade in the shadows. While the races of the depths meet the merchants of the surface in the city, evil forces begin a relentless slaughter of anything in their path. With a temple unable to help, and a council unwilling to save its own people, it is up to an exiled dwarf, a reluctant assassin, and a failed acolyte to save the city from total annihilation.

The Depths Solypse Book One Paul Neslusan 9781505490152 Books

If you loved The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings you are sure to love "The Depths."

I was totally immersed in the book within the first few pages. Instead of creating a new world in the far reaches of space, author Paul Neslusan creates a hidden city thousands of feet below the earth's surface.

Solypse is a city of layers, physical layers, spiritual and political layers. It is populated by dwarfs, elves, humans, magicians and more. And what is even more fascinating is that this is a novel of layers. The history of how Solypse came into being is slowly revealed at the same time as the layers of each of the main characters are peeled off to reveal the heroes hidden beneath.

The plot is complex and fast moving as we move back and forth between a small band of travelers on a trade mission, to the impending danger to the City of Solypse. As the travelers fight for survival on "the path," their backgrounds unfold. Pash is the powerless pawn of a domineering, ruthless father. The Temple priests are sending him on a mission to see if he can "come into his own." Larrik, a dwarf with a hidden past, has been sent to protect Path -- and Cillian, who has been ordered to accompany them is a master assassin.

As Solypse comes under attack by an unspeakably evil forces, it is up to these three to gather the resources that will save the city from total annihilation.

I loved the plot and the action, but most of all I loved the character development and the forging of relationships between groups of people who would not ordinarily become friends.

"Book ONE" would imply that Book Two is in the works, I have my fingers crossed that I don't have to wait too long!

The Depths Solypse Book One Paul Neslusan 9781505490152 Books Reviews

I really enjoyed the first book in this fantasy series. The Depths and Solypse are unique and very intriguing! I'm looking forward to reading more about these characters.
The book is complex and requires effort on the part of the reader as he journeys through a strange world. Slowly but surely, however, I was drawn in to its dramatic and inexorable conclusion. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
For anyone seeking an incredible fantasy tale, I highly recommend this book. The characters are original and captivating. The plot is engaging and dramatic. The language is smart, coherent, and refined without being even a little bit boring. This is one of the only books I've read this year that has drawn me in from start to finish. The Depths manages to retain everything I love about fantasy without relying on overused cliches of the genre. Overall, I have one thing to say trust me. You want to read this book.
I'm hesitant with new writers, but am so glad I took a bet on this book. From the surprising shift of the classic archetypes, to a clever darker feel, this is the type of fantasy fiction I love. The magic system is clear but unexpected, and the world created is unique and kept me guessing. Great debut and already anticipating the sequel.
I enjoyed this book. I like world building and getting to experience new worlds in my mind while I'm reading and Paul did not disappoint with the setting of The Depths. I thought it was well imagined and he did a good job of alluding to the different races and creatures in his underground environment without getting too bogged down in the details. The novel had a good pace and I found myself turning the pages toward the end, waiting to see how the protagonists would fare. It was like going on a D&D campaign in an R.A. Salvatore inspired world.

This was an outstanding first novel by Mr. Neslusan, and I look forward to reading his forthcoming novels!!
The fantasy genre is not something that I normally gravitate toward, but I am so glad that I made an exception for this book. The author constructed a completely unique and original setting for his story and then populated it with a great cast of expertly developed characters that the reader quickly becomes invested in. The story takes some completely unforeseen twists on the way to its wild conclusion and I genuinely enjoyed the journey. I am very glad to see that this book appears to be the first in a series. Can't wait for the next one!
I admit, I've given the book 5 stars. If you read this review you might think why, but please hear me out. The book was a bit difficult to follow when I started reading it. With so many characters introduced in a chapter by chapter basis, I struggled to see the thread connecting them or the book really making any sense. But once the characters started to engage one another, the story truly took a life of its own. There were even a couple of moments that truly made me gasp aloud. Any book that can surprise me not once, but at least twice, deserves my highest accolades. I would highly recommend the book to anyone who enjoys a good read, especially of this genre.
