A Violet and Two Gentlemen edition by Petronela Ungureanu Literature Fiction eBooks

What a strange story--almost gothic. Violet is a genteel lady, daughter of a respected and liked country physician, and grand daughter of a deceased Baron. She and her father have fallen on hard times due to a sudden illness that left him with a weak heart. They are almost out of money due to medical expenses, his health is worsening, and they can't pay the rent on the small cheap apartment where they live or for more medicine for him. Violet finds a job offer in the newspaper for a housekeeper position that pays well. She interviews for the job with the mother of the man, Lord Wilton, she will be working for. The man has recently lost his wife tragically and he has hidden himself away in his room for months. Sometimes he won't eat, doesn't bathe, doesn't want to see anyone, and won't speak to anyone. If she takes the job she will be expected by the mother to try to bring him back to life. Since she has no other choice she gratefully takes the job.
The second gentleman from the title is Lord Wilton's best friend, Captain Thunder. He is an American tobacco plantation owner and owns many slaves. He has a reputation for being a rake and flirts with every woman he sees, including Violet. Lord Wilton has invited Captain Thunder for dinner and wants Violet to attend as well. It is the perfect setup for a possible love triangle with Violet caught in the middle. The rest of the story is how this potentially explosive situation works itself out. The story is worth 4 stars.

The reason I have given it 3 stars is for the editing. Words are used that don't fit the context. At first I thought maybe the e-book version had been scanned since that can cause errors like h instead of n, r confused with t, etc. But the errors in this book are simply strange, like tremolo used twice when the context would suggest the use of tremor. Tremolo is a musical term similar to vibrato where two similar sounds are alternated quickly to make a wavering sound. "She bit her lips, in a strange attempt to numb her constant tremolo." and "She was still trembling. There was a slight tremolo in her members that she could not shake off." Those don't sound to me like situations where she would be making a musical sound.
Also, "She had an impressing bosom", I'm pretty sure she meant "impressive".
And, "He would often take her out for long evening walks in the barouche, secretly holding hands under the folding hood." You don't walk in a carriage, you ride in it.
Violet is embarrassed by unwanted attentions from a man and says, "“Sir, I beg of you, let us maintain a proper conduit, please." A conduit is a tube or channel for passing something through a space such as electrical wires. I'm sure she meant conduct.
Now this one I don't understand at all, "When he saw her, he took off his cigar, gave up his relaxed posture and bowed his head in a slow, intense gesture." How does one take off a cigar, does she mean put out his cigar?
"For a few minutes, Violet stood motionless, caressing his hair. She was unable to produce a reaction. Any reaction. She was laying on her back, looking up..." She had just collapsed to the floor, then she was standing motionless, then was back on the floor looking at the ceiling. She should have been lying motionless on the floor.
There are several more examples where plurals were needed, and a few more where syntax was scrambled.

Violet did some really stupid stuff too, which I won't tell you about because it would give away too much of the plot. If you take the story at face value it has an HEA, but I don't think a tiger can change it's stripes. That makes her last mistake a doozy.

A Violet and Two Gentlemen edition by Petronela Ungureanu Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I received this as a gifted copy for my honest opinion
I am glad to say that this book was the first I've read by this author
This book has interesting twists and intriguing characters to which you can relate to in some cases
I enjoyed this book and will be telling others that this is an enjoyable read
This story is one so far out of my usual tastes but boy, I am so happy that I accepted. The details in the writer's descriptions paint such a clear picture of elegance and of a time so different, where ladies were brought up as ladies and gentlemen respected that. The story is tragic, heartbreaking for so many of the characters yet the ending leaves you with a sense of hope. The reader is taken back to a Europe pre-Civil War, and described in such detail, from the mud gathering at the hem of her dress to what was appropriate or inappropriate to discuss with a female. The differences in culture were delightful and executed effortlessly. It's a short read and one that is so utterly enjoyable, I highly recommend to anyone looking for a period read.
Enjoyed the story. One thing I admire the author for is the realism of the American gentleman's way of life. So many books of this historical era gloss over the slavery issue. As a history buff, I appreciated the scene with the American and the snobbish English woman regarding the way English servants were treated. Many times, those domestic employees were treated quite shabbily- true, they weren't owned but most had no choice but to stay on in deplorable conditions.

There was also a bit of a mystery to the story and a twist in the tale.

If you like historicals with a touch of realism, a touch of mystery and a happy ending, you'll enjoy this one.
A beautifully written historic romance with a bit of mystery. The twist are surprising and I love a good surprise. I enjoy period pieces and enjoyed Ungureanu's writing style. It flowed nicely and was true to the time frame. The speech, clothing descriptions and settings take you back in time and I felt as if I was there along with Violet.

Violet is determined and resolute in the life that has befallen her. Lady Luck was not on her side and she had to make decisions to insure her future. Women of that time didn't have a lot of choices and she did what she had to do. Coming from a family of status to have to work as a housekeeper for Lord Wilton was not an easy decision, but one that had to be done.

Lord Wilton is a emotionally broken man. His friend Captain Thunder is intriguing and adds a bit of a naughty pirate character to the story.

An enjoyable read for anyone who loves a good historic romance.

I was provided a copy for an honest review.

I felt no connection to characters. I so wanted to feel the anguish of the heroine but just could get a connection. I felt the book just sort of ended...
I cannot say why, but it was hard to put down when reading it.

Always a little suspense on what would happen on the next page and the next chapter.
Once again Petronela has outdone herself. Interesting twist to her usual work. She has provided us with a lovely piece of historical fiction that Is beautiful. Petronela is an author who writes straight from the heart. Great buy. Love her books!
