The author of Let the Right One In and Handling the Undead serves up a masterful cocktail of suspense laced with bizarre humour in a narrative that barely pauses for breath.

On a winter trip home to the island of Domaro, Anders and Cecilia take their six-year-old daughter Maja across the ice to visit the lighthouse at Gåvasten.

And Maja disappears. Leaving not even a footprint in the snow.

Two years later, Anders returns to Domaro to confront his despair. He slowly realises that Maja's disappearance is not the first inexplicable tragedy to strike the islanders. Nor is everyone telling him all they know; even his own grandmother, it seems, is keeping secrets.

And what is it about the sea? There's something very bad happening on Domaro-something that involves the sea itself.

'A magician of genre fiction...between monsters outside and demons within, Lindqvist covers the haunted waterfront.' Independent

Harbour eBook John Ajvide Lindqvist Marlaine Delargy Reviews

Let the right one in is always going to be hard to live up too but Harbour is very interesting and a great read . i really like Harbour.
It was make or break time for Mr. Lindqvist. I adore Let the Right One In but I found Handling the Undead to be lacking. This large volume of a hardback would be my best out three book.

Thankfully, Lindqvist mostly delivers, despite some excessive, indulgent character back stories (the book could have easily been a third shorter and lose nothing) and a grandiose ending that doesn't fit with the rest of the story. Some characters, despite being built up, seem to be completely forgotten in the latter stages of the book, which was a shame.

But criticism aside, I enjoyed this one. It had a simple plot that gradually deepened, had believable, likable characters and some great shock moments. A harsher editorial hacking would have been better though.
Another excellent novel from my favorite horror writer of the moment. His writing is often beautiful without ever going into hugely descriptive mode. Everything is clear, defined, described and easily accessible to the reader with only a few lyrical flights of fancy.
You could easily be half way through the novel, assuming it to be a tragedy, set on a small island off the coast of Sweden. When a young man’s daughter goes missing whilst on a family holiday to the island he is left to suffer the consequences. This is set amid the history and people of the island, all of whom have a story to tell in one way or another. There are only a few minor hints that this is a horror story, that you could be forgiven for missing, and a good one to boot. I believe that it could so easily not have been and a tragedy instead. But well into the book clues start to emerge, bad things start happening, The sea, that shapes the lives of the Islanders is acting strangely.
This is a well written book with great characterization, even if there were a few, little things, that I considered unneeded for the tale to take shape.
A great novel with everything set in the storytelling to lead to a fierce climax. Highly recommended.
This was a huge disappoint however, the individual who sent the book was wonderful. Right on time and well wrapped.
This is a great book!! I bought it again for my daughter this time! I can't wait for his new book!!
